For Prospective Graduate Students from Outside Ritsumeikan University

The Computational Biology Laboratory accepts preliminary inquiries from students at universities other than Ritsumeikan University who wish to apply to a master’s or doctoral program. This page summarizes the information required for a preliminary consultation with the laboratory. Please be sure to check the admissions information provided by the Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering and the latest application guidelines for details regarding eligibility, required documents, examination schedules, residence status, and other requirements. A preliminary consultation, interview, or signature or seal on a research plan does not guarantee admission or acceptance into the laboratory.

Research Areas and Languages Used in the Laboratory

Our laboratory develops computational methods for understanding the states, dynamics, and causal relationships of biological systems from biological images and time-series data. Our main research areas include:

  • Recognition and segmentation of microscopy and biological images
  • Machine learning with limited labeled data
  • Robust image analysis under changes in imaging conditions or data distributions
  • Representation learning and self-supervised learning
  • State estimation, future prediction, and anomaly detection from time-series images
  • Causal structure estimation from short time-series data
  • Simulation of biological phenomena using mathematical models

A previous specialization in biology is not required. However, students are expected to study the biology, mathematics, statistics, machine learning, and programming needed for their research.

Experience with medical or general image analysis may provide a useful foundation in image analysis and machine learning. However, the research plan submitted during the preliminary consultation may not be carried out exactly as proposed. The research topic may be adjusted or changed according to the data available in our laboratory, ongoing research projects, and supervision arrangements.

Japanese is the primary language used in laboratory seminars, research supervision, and daily communication. English may also be used when necessary, but the laboratory does not operate exclusively in English. Applicants to an English-based degree program should discuss the language environment for research supervision and laboratory activities during the preliminary consultation.

When to Contact Us and Information Required in the Initial Email

Preliminary consultation, document review, interviews, and adjustment of the research plan require sufficient time. As a general rule, please contact us two to three months before the application period begins. Late inquiries may not allow sufficient time to review the materials, arrange an interview, adjust the research plan, or sign and seal the required documents.

Please include the following information in your initial email. Use the subject line “Preliminary Consultation for Graduate Admission: Name and Intended Enrollment Date.”

  1. Your full name
  2. Your intended enrollment date and the admissions route through which you plan to apply
  3. Your current country or region of residence
  4. Your Japanese- and English-language proficiency, including any language test scores
  5. Your reasons for applying to our laboratory
  6. If you intend to change your current affiliation for reasons other than the ordinary graduation or completion of your current program, please describe your current enrollment status, period of enrollment, and reasons for the change.

In addition, please prepare each of the following documents as a separate PDF or Word file and attach all of them to a single email.

  1. A current curriculum vitae (CV), including your present affiliation
  2. Your undergraduate academic transcript and, if you have attended a graduate program, your graduate academic transcript
  3. An abstract or the full text of your undergraduate or master’s thesis, whichever is most recent and applicable
  4. Your proposed research topic and research plan, approximately one page in a freely formatted Word document; please do not use the official graduate admissions form at this stage
  5. Evidence of Japanese- or English-language proficiency, if available
  6. If applicable, evidence of your implementation experience in machine learning, image analysis, or data analysis (optional)

CV, academic transcripts, undergraduate theses, and related documents written in languages other than Japanese or English are accepted. However, if the submitted abstract or full text of your undergraduate thesis is written in another language, please also provide an abstract in Japanese or English so that we can review its content. If your academic transcript is written in a language other than Japanese or English, please also provide a brief explanation in Japanese or English of the course titles and grading system. Certified translations are not required for the initial consultation. Please follow the latest application guidelines regarding any translations or certifications required for the formal application.

If you have experience implementing machine learning, image analysis, or data analysis methods, please, if possible, attach a representative excerpt of source code that you implemented yourself or provide the URL of a publicly accessible repository. Please also briefly explain the purpose of the code and what it does. If the code was developed as part of a collaborative research or development project, clearly indicate the parts for which you were responsible. Do not attach datasets, trained models, large files, personal information, credentials, or materials that you are not authorized to share. You may be asked to explain the submitted materials during an interview.

Process from Preliminary Consultation to Application

The review process generally proceeds as follows:

  1. Preliminary inquiry by email
  2. Review of the submitted materials
  3. Submission of additional materials, if necessary
  4. Interview
  5. Adjustment of the research topic and research plan
  6. Decision regarding the possibility of supervision and acceptance
  7. Signing and sealing of the research plan, if required
  8. Formal application

An interview is not offered to every applicant who submits materials. After reviewing the submitted documents, we will contact applicants if we decide to proceed to an interview.

Applicants who wish to join our laboratory must consult with us in advance regarding the appropriate admissions route and then apply through that route, undergo the required selection process, and be admitted to the Graduate School. Requirements concerning language test scores, residence status, and residence cards vary depending on the admissions route, degree program, intended enrollment date, and other circumstances. For example, applicants to the Japanese-based Master’s Program through Regular Admissions are required to submit a TOEIC Listening & Reading Test score. Non-Japanese applicants applying from within Japan may also be required to hold a residence card valid for a specified period, depending on the admissions route and examination date.

The laboratory cannot make an official determination of an applicant’s eligibility or provide an individual guarantee concerning admissions requirements. Before applying, please check the official admissions information and the latest application guidelines. Questions concerning formal admissions requirements should be directed to the university office specified in the application guidelines.
